The HUMMER is a "High Mobility" wheeled vehicle. This multi-purpose vehicle is currently producted in four styles: a 2 Passenger Hard Top Enlarged Cab (XLC2); a 4 Passenger Open Top Hard Doors (HMCO); a 4 Passenger Hard Top (HMC4); and a 4 Passenger Wagon (HMCS). Devlopment of the HUMMER did not happen overnight. The "High Mobility, Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle" concept has been in the making since the early 1970's. The light tactical wheeled vehicle fleet that was fielded to the U.S. Forces form the 1950's through the 1970's consisted of the M151 seriers 1/4-ton, the 1/4-ton Mechanical Mule, the 1 1/4-ton Gamma Goat and the 1 1/4-ton M880 utility vehicle. Such a variety of vehicle posed servere logistical, supply, maintenance and training problems. A single, multi-purpose vehicle was neeeded. After more than two years of testing by AM General and the U.S. Government, and participation in a competive bid process, the Hummer was selected as the new light military vehicle. In 1983, the company was awarded a contract to build more than 55,000 HUMMER's over a five year period. The actual number of vehicles built during this 5 year program was over 70,000 units. In 1989, AM General was awarded a new 5 year contract to build over 33,000 additional HUMMER's. Then in 1991, due to public demand, AM General announced that it would produce HUMMER's for the civilian marketplace.
