ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:History of 1958 Chevy Corvette Limited Edition car. Newly designed body panels, new instrument panel, new upholstry, dual headlights, louvers on the hood and two chrome bars on the rear deck were just some of the design innovations on the 1958 Corvette. Indeed, fresh design was essential now that Corvette was the only American sports car around. The competition had evolved its sports car into a family sedan, and now the Corvette was master of the road! Initial work on the 1958 design began as far back as 1956 when the fiberglass styling model was completed. Because it was radically different from its predecessors, much engineering work needed to be done before the car was ready for the market. In that time, however, the initial all-new design was shelved and its place, came a newly worked body of an existing Corvette. The new body was 9.2 inches longer than their previous designs with most of the extra length in the front. Bumpers were attached to the frame rather than to the body as they had been previously. Interior cowl supports and metallic backing along the rocker panels were also added. These additions increased the Corvette's weight by almost 200 pounds, sothat a fully equipped 1958 Corvette weighed over 3,000 pounds.And like the 1957 Corvette, the 1958 model came with a slew of options so that the sports car enthusiast could almost create his own automobile. A 230 hp engine with 4-barrel carburetor, a 245 hp engine with twin 4-barrel carburetors, and a 250 and 290 hp engine with Ramjet Fuel Injection were among the choices for under the hood. The 58's Corvette proved its high-speed performance at Daytona and Sebrings, but it was on the road that the impresive new-looking model truly won the hearts of serious drivers.
